COB vs SMD Whose brightness is higher? 2021
I love my LED lights because they are long lasting and are more efficient than fluorescent. It also has low maintenance costs because I don’t have to replace the bulbs as often.
The truth is, there are two kinds of LEDs: the chip-on-board, or COB, LED, and the surface-mount diode, or SMD, LED.
Both do a good job of producing light, but they have different strengths. For example, the downlight with crystal lenses is more expensive but provides a clearer, more focused beam.
The COB LED and SMD LED lights are different in that the COB light has a bowl-shaped reflector that directs light in all directions, while the SMD LED only has one side of the light facing towards you.
COB LED lights feature one mounted LED chip. Because they’re all concentrated in a single area, more cooling is required.
For this reason, you’ll see a big heat sink in the area to dispel the heat. This heat sink is typically made from aluminium which is usually cold to touch. The large size of the heat sinks may cause them to be more expensive than smaller counterparts.
Although a COB LED is efficient, an SMD LED uses even less energy than a COB LED. This happens because more lumens are produced with the same amount of wattage.
SMD LEDs shine brighter and feature frosted reflectors, which enables even spreading of the light. As a result, these lights may cost less. An SMD LED specially designed for indoor applications may be beneficial for someone looking to create a mood or atmosphere within a room.
Why Choose the COB LED?
As a general guideline, COB LED lights come with a number of perks that SMD LED lights lack. For one, they have a much more focused and direct range thanks to reflectors. In addition, you won’t have to deal with the lenses that frosted SMD LED lights because COB LEDs aren’t as “frosty” as those from other lighting manufacturers so if you don’t intend on replacing your light sources within the next five years or so, invest in a set from this category.
As far as downsides go, it could be argued that high ceiling spaces look better if illuminated by LED sources which are more “pointed” at specific areas; although you can work around this by simply using uplighters under cabinets instead of the downlights themselves. With all of this information in mind, consider your situation carefully before investing in either choice!
Why Choose the SMD LED?
Meanwhile, SMD LED lights are great for lighting up large areas because the light they project is much more expansive than with their COB LED counterparts. You can use them in bathrooms, kitchens or bedrooms, but be mindful that there is much more glare involved.
How can we help?
We offer LED light options. These are small lights with semiconductor-based diodes that are available in a wide range of sizes. The light emitted is directional, with the most widely used being Lambertian radiation. The visible color of the light produced depends on the materials used to produce it. Some of our most popular products include COB LED and SMD LED lights; these are especially great for projects that require high brightness output or if you want to make sure you use less power. Since they’re more durable than traditional light sources, you can reduce their replacement cost by 90% without compromising quality!
